Balfour Beatty helps protect communities and economies from the devastating impact of flooding and coastal erosion.

We have been working in this sector continuously for more than 25 years. In the past 15 years we have successfully delivered over seventy-five coastal protection and flood defence projects – significantly reducing the risk to properties and providing greater peace of mind to families and businesses across the UK.

Across the UK, we proudly work alongside the Environment Agency, Internal Drainage Boards and Councils to develop resilient solutions that help communities adapt to the threat from flooding and coastal erosion, maintaining vibrant economies, keeping businesses open and transport networks connected.

Working collaboratively with project partners from the earliest stages, we draw on our extensive expertise on a wide range of solutions, from cliff stabilisation, new and improved sea walls and beach erosion protection, to implementing flood alleviation measures including flood storage basins and reservoirs, flood embankments, new and enhanced pumping stations, desilting rivers and canals, as well as delivering compensatory habitat schemes.

Our role as the civil contractor partner for the Thames Estuary Asset Management (TEAM) 2100 Pathfinder Project, as well as our involvement in the UK's only Public Private Partnership coastal project at Pevensey has equipped us with a detailed asset management understanding and expertise. Leveraging this knowledge and working with our expert supply chain partners, we develop business cases, designs and define material choices, enabling us to deliver programmes of work that offer exceptional value for money.

In times of crisis, our emergency response teams spring into action, offering rapid and effective solutions, going to extraordinary lengths to save lives and properties affected by coastal erosion and flooding.

We are known for our innovative problem-solving, such as deploying the Mobile Unit Lifting Equipment (MULE) at Sandsend, near Whitby and introducing project efficiencies and value engineering. Sustainability is always a priority, and we strive to leave a positive legacy in the communities we serve. This includes using low carbon concrete and sustainable timber.

The video below shows how our team used a one-of-a-kind innovation to successfully protect a Yorkshire coastline.

We play an essential role in providing Internal Drainage Boards innovative solutions to prevent flooding and manage land drainage. This helps sustain economies, supports the production of goods and food and ensures the connectivity of transport networks.

Refurbishing existing, and constructing new, pumping stations, and improving drainage systems, our teams of experts sustainably design and build land drainage assets that will assist the production of the UK future food requirements for years to come.

We also have experience of collaborating with local stakeholders and environmental organisations to obtain approvals and consents. This includes planning consents and other environmental consents, including licences for working at sea.

Working closely with Internal Drainage Board consortia across the east and south of England we assess the residual life of the drainage assets, develop robust business cases for funding, and determining sustainable solutions to support, improve and maintain land drainage capabilities.

We can also provide reactive and planned maintenance and upgrades on non-infrastructure assets through frameworks, such as our award-winning partnership with Anglian Water, @one Alliance.

We take a comprehensive approach to managing networks that are vital for communities. From clean and wastewater mains to treatment facilities and other critical infrastructure, we manage every aspect of the lifecycle. Collaborating closely with our trusted supply chain partners, we employ cutting-edge techniques and leverage the power of digital tools to streamline our projects, saving both time and costs.
