National Treatment Centre, Inverness

We’ve built  a world-class national treatment centre that enhances the experience of patients through improved services and facilities.

We collaborated with NHS Highland to construct a new £32 million specialist treatment centre for ophthalmology and orthopaedic elective care services. Designed to deliver world-class performance, with patient-centred care at its heart, the National Treatment Centre will help to reduce waiting times and meet the rising demand for a variety of procedures and operations for patients across the Highlands and north of Scotland.

The purpose-built facility is 8,305 sqm, and includes 24 inpatient rooms, 13 consultation rooms five operating theatres, X-ray department, clinics and outpatient departments.

Unrivalled engineering expertise

Procured through the NHS Scotland Framework 2 under a tailored NEC3 contract, we utilised our Group construction and support services expertise to seamlessly deliver a comprehensive scope of works which included:

  • Fully integrated civils and building services delivered by our Regional Scotland team
  • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and instrumentation solutions efficiently delivered by Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick

Improving healthcare construction

Working in collaboration with NHS Scotland Assure, we helped to design a healthcare facility to meet modern healthcare standards, reducing risk and improving patient safety. Following NHS Assure KSAR and HAIScribe processes ensured appropriate infection prevention and control measures were designed into the project to reduce the risk of transmission of infectious agents and provide the best and safest outcomes for patients, staff and visitors using the facility.

KSAR and HAIScribe reviews focused on making sure that Infection Prevention and Control were a key consideration throughout the facility but in particular in respect to the following systems:

  • Water and drainage
  • Ventilation
  • Electrical
  • Medical gases
  • Fire

Collaborating to deliver world-leading specialist healthcare facility

Through integration and collaborative working with multiple stakeholders, supply chain and large delivery teams, we were able to develop a state-of-the-art facility that offers improved healthcare delivery for generations to come. We prioritised early contractor involvement and high-quality communication to create an efficient design and construction process that maximises patient care through new ideas in design, procedures, systems and innovation.

The success of the project also attributed to our relationship with NHS Highland's project management team. We have previously collaborated on other critical healthcare facilities in Scotland, demonstrating continuity of collaboration and understanding of technical engineering guidance to build a safe and efficient operation of healthcare infrastructure.

Inspiring young people about construction

Our project team and NHS Highland collaborated tirelessly to support our sustainability ambition to positively impact one million people by 2040 and improve the prosperity and wellbeing of local communities.

We provided work experience placements and employment opportunities for local college and university students aiming to inspire and provide real life opportunities for young people pursuing careers in construction and cultivate the next generation of engineers.

Supporting local supply chain and charities

In support of the local community, our team embarked on a challenging 17km climb to raise funds for Maggie’s Highlands, a charity providing free support to people living with cancer in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Additionally, we partnered with Inspire Highland, a local charity advocating for individuals with disabilities and additional support needs. Our collaboration included an accessibility audit and a visit by charity representatives to ensure the new facility met their standards.
