We’re designing and building Scotland’s first net-zero tertiary education facility and leading the way with the Scottish Government's Net Zero Public Sector Buildings Standard.
As part of this innovative collaboration between Fife College and Fife Council, we are responsible for the delivery of the new Fife College, consisting of three interconnected buildings spanning over 20,000m², which will house state-of-the-art teaching facilities and learning spaces for students, staff, and business clients.
The new Fife College is the largest pathfinder project for the Scottish Government’s Net Zero Public Sector Buildings Standard in Scotland. The standard has been established by the Scottish Government to drive net zero outcomes for new buildings and major refurbishments within the public sector.
To help meet the Scottish Government’s standards, we have integrated carbon, energy and environmental considerations into the design of the new school. We are also utilising low-carbon materials such as cross-laminated timber and green delta beams which has resulted in an overall 20% reduction in carbon emissions.
Innovative off-site construction practices
Our team have significantly reduced on-site installation time using off-site manufacturing of prefabricate plantrooms, electrical switch rooms, roof modules, vertical risers, and horizontal risers under controlled factory conditions. The precise manufacturing and pretesting before installation have enhanced safety by reducing on-site activities, minimising the teams exposure to hazards. This approach also ensures that all elements are manufactured to high-quality standards and installed correctly the first time.

Using digital tools to drive efficiencies
To enhance efficiency and collaboration, our team is using a range of digital tools and have established a digital project control room which aggregates data from a variety of platforms into user-friendly dashboards. These dashboards serve as a collaborative space, presenting real-time and accurate information for our site teams to make informed decisions, track progress against short-term plans and monitor resource allocation.
Generating positive social impact
Our social impact team has developed a bespoke community benefit plan to ensure we leave a positive legacy for both the students and local community. To date, we have:
- Provided employment opportunities to people living in the local area.
- Collaborated with Fife College, to offer work placement opportunities to their Civil Engineering foundation apprentices giving them valuable site experience and industry-recognised certification.
- Our team volunteered with the Fife Coast & Countryside Trust, participating in tree planting and litter-picking days at Coul Den.
- Partnered with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity to support the mental health and wellbeing of our team.
Our efforts have been recognised with a gold award at the national Considerate Construction Scheme awards, highlighting our commitment not only to local employment but also to fostering a valued workforce.
