We constructed a new hospital providing high-quality sustainable services for the communities of Sky, Lochalsh and Southwest Ross.
We were appointed as the main building contractor to deliver the design and build of a new community hospital for NHS Highland. During the preconstruction phase, we worked closely with Hub North Scotland to ensure we provided the best possible design solution at the most cost-effective price and to also deliver a high quality, community-centric health and social care system that benefits the entire community.
The new health facility consists of 24 inpatient bedrooms, a midwife-led community maternity unit, an emergency department, x-ray and ultrasound facilities, facilities for physiotherapy, infusions and renal dialysis as well as a base for the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Procuring locally to deliver a successful project
As the Tier 1 contractor, we completed the design and build of the new community hospital. We utilised Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering expertise to provide innovative pilling and ground improvement services for this technically challenging project. As part of our effort in supporting local businesses and bring value to the communities we work in, we localised our supply chain to boost economic growth and create benefits for the community that reach beyond build. A total of £6.5m was spent in the Highland region through direct employment or procurement with local businesses, with a further £16 million spent with Scottish based businesses.

Utilising local supply chain enabled us to generate excellent innovations and develop a stronger understanding of the local area, maximising our efficiency on the project and minimising the environmental impact.
Inspiring the next generation and supporting local community
Wherever we operate, we strive to leave a positive legacy. We aspire to be integrated within the neighbourhood, supporting the local community and charitable programmes and invest in future talent through apprenticeship schemes and work placement opportunities.
An Architectural Technology Graduate joined us for a two-week work placement on the project site. He supported our digital, planning and community teams with 3D visualisation, BIM and site planning. Another exciting opportunity arose for a graduate who worked with us as part of their 2-year graduate programme, allowing them to learn, develop and build skills, knowledge, and capabilities while on the project.
Our team assisted the local community by offering materials for the new Community Fridge in Broadford. Timber was purchased from a local trade merchant to create additional shelving within the community fridge. We also supported a local school by donating 15 sets of personal protective equipment, such as hi-vis vests, safety gloves, and litter picking grabbers for the children to use for litter picking around Broadford. Keeping Broadford clean while keeping the children safe.
