Balfour Beatty has secured a £25.7 million contract to renovate the historic Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen on behalf of Aberdeen City Council.
The scheme forms part of the Council’s City Centre Masterplan project which will transform the Victorian park in Aberdeen into an inclusive 21st Century space; improving access, amenity and activity whilst enhancing Union Terrace Garden’s heritage features.
As part of the works, Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the construction of three new pavilions, a new accessible walkway into the gardens from Union Street, as well as associated landscaping and lighting. In addition, the company will sympathetically refurbish the historic Victorian Union Terrace arches.

Council Co-Leader Councillor Douglas Lumsden said: “With the selection of Balfour Beatty as contractor, the job of turning the vision for Union Terrace Gardens into reality is about to start in earnest. This is a moment for celebration right across Aberdeen.
“The investment we’re making is transforming our city and the benefits will be felt throughout the region. Generations to come can share in the rewards.”
Council Co-Leader Councillor Jenny Laing added: “In progressing plans for Union Terrace Gardens we have listened to residents’ wishes while aiming to secure best value for the city.”
“Union Terrace Garden’s regeneration will complement other major infrastructure projects nearing completion, including the Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA) and the redeveloped Aberdeen Art Gallery, both world-class facilities. “The city is moving forward as one and making history as we go.”
Works are due to commence this summer with completion expected in summer 2021.
