Balfour Beatty Plant & Fleet Services has been awarded ‘Cost Saving Initiative of the Year’ at the 2016 Fleet News Awards. The award recognises the work supporting the Balfour Beatty Build to Last programme. The awards took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London where over 1,500 guests gathered for one of the biggest networking evenings of the year.
Now in its 28th year, and recognised as the most influential awards ceremony in the fleet industry, the evening recognised fleets, managers and suppliers who demonstrate best practice, innovative products and great customer service in the industry.
Balfour Beatty Plant & Fleet sources and manages all items of plant, from everyday tools to specialist overhead line equipment, as well as managing a sustainable supply of fleet vehicles, for the wider Balfour Beatty Group. As the Balfour Beatty Group’s Centre of Excellence for Plant & Fleet, the team is continually introducing new initiatives to ensure continuous improvement in its offering to the business. These activities have also received industry recognition in their own right, such as the Fleet News ‘Safe Fleet of the Year’ accolade for an innovative ‘Permit to Drive’ scheme awarded in 2015.
However, the new Build to Last programme from Chief Executive Leo Quinn drove further initiatives resulting in further savings in four key areas. These included reductions in fuel spend through standardisation and effective supply chain management, fuel management though changing spend behaviours at driver level, fleet efficiency looking at maximising utilisation and reporting to monitor and maintain improvements made.
Commenting on the award win, Fleet News judges said, “This is a comprehensive initiative that extends across all parts of the business; Balfour Beatty’s Build to Last programme demonstrates forward-thinking and is supported by clear evidence of performance improvements and on-going tracking. Well measured and monitored, it has been driven from the top with investment that yields results, both now and for the long-term”.
