Balfour Beatty hits the jackpot at the Institution of Civil Engineers Awards 2022

25 October 2022

UK

Balfour Beatty has taken home one of the top accolades at this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) awards – securing the coveted ‘People’s Choice’ award for its Stockingfield Bridge project in Scotland.

The ICE ‘People’s Choice’ award recognises civil engineering projects around the globe that have made a positive impact on local communities.

Balfour Beatty, alongside its partners, was commended for connecting three communities on either side of the Forth and Clyde Canal for the first time since 1870.

The technically complex structure was also acknowledged for its green infrastructure credentials - offering a traffic-free cycle route between Glasgow and Edinburgh and becoming the ‘missing link’ in the National Cycle Network.

Hector MacAulay MBE, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s UK Construction business in Scotland said: “This is a remarkable achievement recognising how at Balfour Beatty, we always go above and beyond to leave a lasting, positive legacy wherever we operate.

“Alongside our colleagues at SCAPE Group and Scottish Canals, we have successfully connected three communities in the north of Glasgow; creating permanent green infrastructure and in doing so, improving travel for hundreds of people each day.”

Commenting on the award win, Wendy Blundell, Director ICE Regions, said: “ICE People’s Choice Award is a great opportunity for the public to learn more about what we do while showcasing the great civil engineering projects we have across the UK.

“Civil engineers are often the unsung heroes behind schemes that have provided such a positive impact on local communities and Stockingfield Bridge is certainly one of those – linking communities again after more than 200 years.”

Awarded through the SCAPE Scotland Civil Engineering framework, Balfour Beatty commenced work to construct the new 3.5-metre-wide bridge in 2021 on behalf of Scottish Canals. The new curved footbridge allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross the canal at towpath level, connecting the communities of Maryhill, Ruchill and Gilshochill to get around locally in a sustainable way.
