Balfour Beatty’s restoration of the 145-year-old Grade A listed Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, transforming it into the Edinburgh Futures Initiative a high-quality modern teaching and learning facility for the University of Edinburgh, has featured in a project report in Building Magazine.
The article explores the delicate refurbishment of the historic and iconic building, which faced many unique complexities such as extensive structural work and unexpected discoveries, including human remains and dry rot in masonry, and how the company overcame these to successfully integrate the old and new.
Building Magazine shares how sustainability was front of mind during the restoration of the building and how by repurposing the previously derelict building, the team achieved a 40% reduction in embodied carbon savings - the amount of carbon emitted during the construction of a building.
