Three Balfour Beatty Construction projects earned 2013 Excellence in Construction awards from the Carolinas Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). The winning buildings are high-profile new construction and renovation projects in North Carolina’s institutional, commercial, and higher education markets.
The Wake County Justice Center and SPX Headquarters projects received first-in-category Eagle Awards. In recognition of its superior craftsmanship, the SPX Headquarters is also being considered for ABC’s most prestigious award, “Project of the Year,” which is given to a project that best exemplifies quality construction. The “Project of the Year” winner will be announced at the 12th Annual EIC Industry Showcase banquet held on November 21 at The Westin Charlotte.

Wake County Justice Center – Recognized in the Other: Over $50 Million category: In a joint venture with Barnhill Contracting Company, Balfour Beatty Construction served as the Construction Manager at-Risk on this state-of-the-art, 576,996-square-foot, 11-story building that will allow a growing population in Wake County to participate in the judicial system and local government activities for decades to come. In recognition of its environmental stewardship, the building recently received Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification for New Construction from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
SPX Headquarters – Recognized in the Commercial: Over $50 Million category:Balfour Beatty Construction served as the Construction Manager at-Risk for SPX Corporation’s corporate global headquarters located in south Charlotte’s Ballantyne Corporate Park, which is developed and owned by The Bissell Companies. The project consisted of both core and shell and tenant improvement work on a 241,033-square-foot, nine-story, “Class A” office building with all-glass exterior curtain wall; a 239,037-square-foot, 640-car below grade parking deck; and 4.5 acres of site improvements. In October 2011, the Charlotte Business Journal recognized SPX’s headquarters as the 17th Largest Area Construction Project, ranked by square feet under construction. The project sought and achieved a single LEED for New Construction Silver certification inclusive of both the core and shell and tenant improvement work.
Balfour Beatty Construction’s contributions to the campus of Appalachian State University were also recognized with an ABC award. The Plemmons Student Union Addition & Living Learning Center project earned a Merit Award in the Schools: Over $50 Million category. Up to three projects in each category are eligible to receive Merit Awards.
