With National Apprenticeship Week underway, Balfour Beatty has been featured in Ground Engineering magazine and New Civil Engineer, highlighting the numerous benefits apprenticeships bring to businesses and individuals, the importance of industry collaboration, and the rewarding career opportunities within the construction and infrastructure sector.
In Ground Engineering magazine, Harry Lambert, a Level 3 civil engineering apprentice at Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering, shared his insights on the advantages of pursuing an apprenticeship. Harry says: “One of the main advantages of an apprenticeship is the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while seeing the tangible outcomes of the work you contribute to. This practical exposure is invaluable in building real-world skills.” He also highlighted the significance of the day-release system for further education, which allows apprentices to balance work and studies effectively.
Meanwhile, New Civil Engineer featured an article by Andrew Pakes MP, on the vital role apprenticeships play in developing the workforce of tomorrow, especially in light of the government’s recent commitment to accelerating nuclear infrastructure planning. Stephen Tarr, Balfour Beatty’s divisional CEO and Group sector lead for UK Energy, was quoted saying, “The importance of Sizewell C extends far beyond nuclear energy. This project will provide a gateway to developing the skills that will be used to develop all forms of infrastructure, from hospitals to schools to transport networks. Trained through Sizewell C, the next generation of skilled workers will be those that build the critical infrastructure that supports our communities and economy for years to come.”
Balfour Beatty remains committed to attracting the next generation of talent, with 7.4% of the company’s UK workforce made up of Apprentices, Graduates, Trainees, and Sponsored Students as part of its membership of The 5% Club - a dynamic movement of employers committed to providing ‘Earn & Learn’ positions.
