Balfour Beatty’s Strategic Design Partnership 2.0. (SDP 2.0.) has featured in Design & Build UK highlighting the recent Young People in Construction Hackathon – a collaborative event hosted with partners AtkinsRéalis, WSP, Jacobs and Mott MacDonald.
Held in March, the day-long event gave early-career professionals the chance to explore Balfour Beatty’s Digital Rehearsal Tool and develop ideas for how it could better support collaboration between design and construction teams. Working in cross-discipline teams, participants tackled real-world challenges before presenting their solutions to a judging panel.
Event organiser Tabitha Churchill, a graduate at Balfour Beatty, said: “We believe the event encouraged participants to consider how digital tools might influence their work in the future.”
Attendees praised the opportunity to learn from mentors and connect across businesses. Benjamin Bavington, a Graduate Civil Engineer at AtkinsRéalis, said: “It was a very positive experience to present ideas and have those ideas critiqued in a collaborative environment.” Mott MacDonald’s Jack Pickering added: “It’s increased my interest in digital tools – though it was already high!”
With plans underway for a second Hackathon later this year, the SDP continues to show its commitment to supporting the next generation of construction professionals.
