Balfour Beatty’s restoration the restoration of the 145-year-old Grade A listed Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, transforming it into the Edinburgh Futures Initiative -a high-quality modern teaching and learning facility for the University of Edinburgh - has featured in the Scottish Construction Now and Project Scotland.

In the article, Archie Burns, Project Director and Angela Pluu, Sustainability Manager speak about the challenges associated with restoring the historic building whilst preserving its rich structural history and heritage as well as how sustainability was the cornerstone of the project.

Commenting on the embodied carbon savings achieved, Angela said: “Even with extensive reworking, the project has a smaller carbon footprint than it would if the building were rebuilt entirely. Retaining the building’s structure supports our long-term sustainability objectives.”

Speaking about the technology used, Archie said: “Scanning is definitely the way forward with existing buildings. Because of the shape of these buildings, if you don’t scan them, it’s more difficult to actually get services to fit into plant rooms and some of the tight spaces like the vent towers on the roof.
