Balfour Beatty features in New Civil Engineer discussing Paddington mega-tent

Balfour Beatty has featured in New Civil Engineer discussing the complex strengthening works to a 112-year-old bridge situated at Paddington Station thanks to a pioneering ‘mega-tent’.

With over 100 tonnes of steel added to the bridge first built in 1912, Balfour Beatty experts have renovated and reinforced the bridge’s main cross girders and longitudinal beams to ensure its structural integrity for generations to come.

Balfour Beatty Engineering Manager Bob Barker, said: “It was essential to keep the platform below dry, because the slip resistance of the Grade II listed tiles on the actual platform surface [is very low] – if it gets wet, it’s like an ice rink. So it was critical to maintain the safety of the passengers walking through.

“Additionally, the intention was to bring in an overhead crane. Because of the constrictions on both sides, we couldn’t have any cranes on either side, whether they were tower cranes or temporary mobile cranes. So it was considered a necessity to have the overhead crane to allow the materials to be brought in and for beams and girders to be lifted out.”
