Balfour Beatty employee becomes first Hensman Prize winner

31 July 2024

UK

Balfour Beatty Regional Social Impact Manager, Lisa Scargill, has made history as the first-ever recipient of the prestigious Hensman Prize for her outstanding contributions to grow and strengthen the Cumbrian community.

Lisa, who graduated earlier this month with a BSc (Hons) in Social Enterprise Leadership from the University of Cumbria, was awarded the prize for her efforts delivering positive social impact projects across the region. Her efforts include supporting children's reading programs in Cumbria, hosting placement students, and enhancing career education in local schools. Additionally, she has actively volunteered in various community initiatives and allocated £30,000 in sponsorships to grassroots causes. Lisa joined Balfour Beatty in November 2022, contributing to the Box Encapsulation Plant (BEP) project at Sellafield in West Cumbria. Her exceptional dedication and hard work earned her a promotion to Regional Social Impact Manager for Balfour Beatty across the North of England last month.

Reflecting on her journey, Lisa expressed gratitude for the support she received from Balfour Beatty, saying: “My Social Impact Manager role on BEP afforded me the chance to develop and deliver these amazing activities, with BEP having the best Social Impact outputs in the project's lifetime, this year. Since joining Balfour Beatty, I’ve always felt supported to continue my studies.”
