With almost 25 years of company service, executive leader Mark Layman has been named chairman and chief executive officer for Balfour Beatty Construction Services US. The promotion comes on the heels of the retirement of Robert Van Cleave, outgoing chairman and CEO, who closed out his 17 years with the business at the end of 2013.
The leadership succession plan has been in place for the past 18 months, with the public announcement of Van Cleave’s intended year-end retirement coming in April 2013.
During Layman’s tenure with the business, he has served in positions of increasing responsibility and strategic influence including the roles of chief financial officer, executive vice president, and for the past two years – president.
Layman holds a bachelors degree in finance from Texas A & M University and serves on the board of directors for Trinity Christian Academy. He is also an active member of the Construction Financial Management Association, the Construction Industry Round Table (CIRT), and the Construction Industry Ethics and Compliance Initiative (CIECI).
Of Layman’s new role as CEO, Van Cleave remarked, “I am inordinately proud to leave our business under the strong and capable direction of Mark Layman. His previous work in guiding and establishing our strategy, structure, vision and purpose makes him the perfect leader to take our company into the future.”
Layman added, “I am humbled to step into the shoes of such a beloved leader as Robert Van Cleave. Further, I am proud and excited to continue my partnership with John Tarpey, chief operations officer and 20 year company veteran, who will partner with me in guiding and implementing the exciting growth strategies and service offerings underway for our team.”
