Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, announces today that it has been awarded a £121 million contract for an 18-storey hotel, leisure and apartment complex in North Greenwich Peninsula, London for Grove Developments Limited.
Following early contractor involvement, Balfour Beatty will design and build the 452-room hotel with leisure and conference facilities, accompanied by 100 serviced apartments. The contract will also involve hard and soft landscaping works designed to create VIP access to London’s O2 arena.
The hotel will be built to the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, the industry’s highest accolade for sustainable best practice in building design, construction and operation. Green design features include photovoltaic panels and rainwater harvesting, which will lower the building’s energy consumption and reduce demand on mains water.
Sustainable construction methods are also being used to minimise adverse environmental impacts. All hotel and apartment bathrooms will be constructed off site as individual modules before being transported and installed on site. This modular system saves construction time on site and reduces carbon emissions by minimising the volume of lorry movements.
The new hotel will support tourism in the UK’s capital by providing quality leisure and accommodation, within close proximity of excellent transport links to London’s tourist attractions and forms part of the wider regeneration of the Greenwich.
Balfour Beatty Chief Executive Officer, Andrew McNaughton, said:
“We are delighted to see that our customers are eager to embrace sustainable best practice to develop a scheme that will help promote UK trade and investment, and welcome the opportunity to apply the sustainable construction methods we have been developing as part of our complex building offering.”
Work will begin this summer and is due for completion in summer 2015.
Also this week, Balfour Beatty confirms its appointment to construct an £11.7 million Aloft Hotel development project for Ashall Property Limited. Situated on the corner of North John Street and Dale Street in Liverpool’s city centre, the scheme will transform the unoccupied Grade II listed, gold-domed Royal Insurance Building into a 116-room design-led Aloft Hotel.
