Balfour Beatty, on behalf of National Highways, has successfully completed a traffic switch on the A63 at the eastern part of the Castle Street Scheme – marking a major milestone on the improvement scheme.
After months of works, the traffic switch marks the start of Phase 3 of the project, which covers the area from the underpass to Marketplace Junction in the city centre. Completed on schedule, the switch will allow Balfour Beatty experts to begin lane two and centre reserve works.
Balfour Beatty A63 Project Director Will Neaves said: “This is a significant milestone in the project. Having completed the bulk excavation for the underpass, where we’ve been digging as deep as seven metres, the traffic switch now allows us to access the centre reserve works and progress the lanes.
“We’ve made excellent progress, and the team are now gearing up for a big push to the end of this year as we work on the centre reserve and prepare the base slab within the underpass.”
On completion, the A63 Castle Street will improve access to the port, congestion, safety and connections between the city centre and the tourist and recreational facilities.
