What you'll be doing
Technical Competency:
- Deep understanding of HV equipment testing and commissioning, including staged commissioning and safety implications.
- Accurate tendering of total commissioning costs, including external commissioning services.
- Verify the competency and authorisation of all commissioning providers and personnel.
- Ensure clear reporting streams and responsibilities for commissioning and testing activities.
Tendering:
- Develop commissioning schedules and hours-based costing for tenders.
- Support site visits and clarify commissioning requirements during the tender phase.
- Participate in project handover meetings to ensure alignment between design, operations, and commissioning requirements.
Training and Development:
- Assess and enhance staff competencies, including internal and external training on substation commissioning requirements.
- Train new and existing commissioning engineers on emerging technologies, procedures, and quality standards.
Procedural Oversight:
- Ensure adherence to site commissioning procedures, meeting both quality and safety standards.
- Provide updated commissioning schedules and reports as required.
- Establish productivity and cost reporting for commissioning activities.
- Enforce consistent safety, QA, and hold point standards across all projects.
Planning and Delivery:
- Develop commissioning programs, including emergency return-to-service plans.
- Attend project meetings to optimise commissioning delivery, productivity, and innovation.
- Monitor commissioning progress, costs, and schedules, and escalate issues to the Project Manager as necessary.
- Aid in forecasting commissioning costs and completion timelines.
Who we're looking for
Essential:
- Relevant operational experience in substation commissioning, with previous authorisations.
- Strong understanding of National Grid commissioning procedures and requirements.
- HNC or equivalent qualification.
- Proven experience managing remote technical teams, including direct reports and subcontractors.
- Knowledge of industry quality documentation standards.
Desirable:
- Experience commissioning large infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with National Grid BP141 standards.
- A technical degree in a relevant field.
